Summer Offerings

For Rising 8th - 12 Graders

1:1, By Arrangement:

  • Tutoring, Creative Writing, Credit Recovery, & Credit Acceleration for most courses are offered 1:1 with Huntington-Surrey teachers throughout the summer. Email mconnor@huntingtonsurrey.org to discuss options.

August Camps and Workshops:

 

Participate in all classes or just one or two - there are no prerequisites!

YOU MAY EARN 0.5 ELECTIVE CREDIT BY TAKING BOTH ART WORKSHOPS (earning credit requires some work done outside of class).

 

Week 1: Monday, July 31st - Friday, August 4th

9:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. - Math Camp with Lily Young$250

  • Get excited about math with origami, geometry with Lego, rescuing people lost at sea with math, and more!

12:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. - Art: Acrylic and Water-Based Painting - $450 (includes supplies)

  • Explore painting and develop skills at any level in this class. Watercolor and acrylic paints will be available. Either or both may be used throughout the week. The subject matter of each painting will be self-directed. One-on-one coaching and a choice of exercises will be available.

  • Open to all levels (rising 8th through 12 grades):

    • Beginning students will be introduced to painting through mini-lessons and exercises to build technique and understanding. Students will also be strongly encouraged to explore and experiment.

    • Intermediate students will be coached on technique and have the opportunity to participate in any relevant mini-lessons or exercises. A focus will be placed on composition and style.

    • Advanced students will be coached on finding their artistic voice and realizing a vision through planning, practice, and iteration. They will have access to all of the mini-lessons and exercises as well.

 

Week 2: Monday, August 7th - Friday, August 11th

9:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. - Programming: Python with Lily Young - $250

  • Learn the basics of one of the most popular programming languages around, Python. Program your own calculator and learn the basics to programming your first, second, or 100th video game. All experience levels are welcome.

12:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. - Art: Sculpture - $450 (includes supplies + firing of ceramics)

  • Explore two unique sculptural processes: hand building with clay and papier mache plus found-object assemblage. The first half of the week will focus on hand building so that there is time to have the pieces bisque fired and glazed before the week is over. During the second half of the week, students will create a sculpture made from papier mache, found-object assemblage, or a combination of both. No previous experience necessary.

Art Elective Credit:

​

If you take both art workshops, you have the option to earn 0.5 elective credit. To earn this optional credit, you will complete some additional work outside of the workshop hours. The instructor will provide details on the first day of class.
